The JPEGiT! Photoshop plug-in enables you to output and read progressive JPEGs from the most popular and powerful graphics programs.

A progressive JPEG is really no more than a standard JPEG compressed image with the data rearranged into a series of scans. Over a slow communications link (as currently used by a large percentage of the on-line community), a decoder can generate a low-quality image quickly from the first scan and gradually improve the quality as more data is received. This incremental display is a progressive JPEG's most appealing feature. Progressive JPEG files also tend to be smaller than sequential JPEG files.

In addition to adding progressive JPEG abilities to Photoshop, the plug-in also allows you to save baseline JPEGs with greater control over image quality than current Photoshop JPEG translators.

Creating JPEGs

Simply drop the plug-in (the file called pjpeg.8bi) into your Photoshop plug-ins folder. If your plug-ins folder is organized by plug-in type, place the JPEGiT! plug-in in the "File Format" folder.

When you save a document, "Progressive JPEG" will appear as one of your save file type options. Select this to generate either progressive or baseline JPEG images. Set the desired image quality and whether you wish the plug-in to output progressive or baseline JPEGs. As an expert option, you can also specify if the image's chroma should be downsampled (leave this option on if you're unsure). Then let the plug-in do the rest of the work.

The plug-in supports RGB, CMYK, and grayscale images. The plug-in does not support alpha channels.

Opening JPEGs

Opening a progressive JPEG in photoshop is even easier. Simply select it from the File menu or just drop the JPEG onto your Photoshop icon.

• Here are a few powertips for you. While setting the image quality, we've gone to great lengths to make it as easy as possible. You can slide the slider, type in a value directly, or click on the slider to set the desired quality.
  
  
• The plug-in works with Adobe Photoshop version 3.0+ and other graphic programs which support Photoshop file format filters.
  
  
• Chroma downsampling is one of the primary methods that the JPEG algorithm uses to achieve compression. If you choose not to downsample the image's chroma values, your file sizes will be larger, though your colors may be a bit truer to the original image. Leave chroma downsampling on if you aren't sure.

When you receive your license, simply enter it when prompted as you save your first progressive JPEG.

If you choose to purchase JPEGiT! you can either mail or fax us the accompanying order form or call (617) 332-6800 to order over the phone. At that time, we will issue you a new license which will fully enable JPEGiT! You can enter the new license when you save your next progressive JPEG. Simply click on the register button in the quality settings dialog.
