Student Hackers `ran £65m free phone call scam'

British students have taken part in an alleged £65m computer fraud, involving
the electronic theft of cards that allow users to make free telephone calls
around the world.
The hackers, one of whom was only 17 years old, were said to be earning
thousands of pounds a month selling cards that incorporated electronic credit
information on the black market. Police found one teenager driving a new
£20,000 car and with computer equipment worth £29,000 in his bedroom.
The students were allegedly recruited by an international group specialising
in computer crime. Their arrest followed a lengthly surveil lance operation
by British detectives and the American secret service. "The age of those
involved in Britain has caused great concern," said one investigator.
"Teenagers seem to think activities like these are just intellectual challenge
and that they won`t be caught."
The investigation began after a routine inquiry into alleged software piracy
involving a teenage student living with his parents in the north-east.
When fraud squad officers raided his home they found dozens of American
electronic telephone credit cards among 2.5 billion bytes of computer
information; that is equivalent to 750,000 A4 pages.
AT&T, the American telecommunications giant, dispatched its own specialist
investigators in Britain and they discovered more than 18,000 cards ready
for distribution. The British end of the fraud is thought to have been
responsible for losses of £11m, much of it from local calls that were
transmitted via the United States.
AT&T officials also found a computer noticeboard called ;' '"Living Chaos"
that was being used to sell the cards for up to £30 each. It mentioned
Andy Gaspard, an employee of the Cleartel telephone company in Washington,
whose home was raided. "We found 61,500 stolen cards ready to be sent to Britain,"
said Eric Watley, a secret service agent in the city.
Gaspard led the investigators to Max Louarn, who called himself the Puppet Master.
From his base in Majorca, the 22-year-old is said to have recruited
British computer students and distributed their stolen cards on the international
hacking network.
Transcripts of telephone taps on Louarn`s home revealed him boasting of being
"the king of credit card fraud". In one conversation he said,"This is brain crime;
this is cool." Louarn was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison and
fined £660,000 by a Virginia court on Friday. Seven people have so far been
arrested in Britain. Police raided homes in Manchester, Tyneside and the east
Midlands last week, and more arrests are likely.
AT&T said more than 24 telecommunications firms were victims of the fraud.
"This is the most significant case we have ever seen. The criminals believed
international boundaries would keep them safe," said a security spokesman.
Ben Swanson, of the Northumbria police fraud squad, said the alleged
British network had a highly organised structure and operated under
the code name "Digital". "There was a developed hierarchy with members
using different code names and adopting specific roles."
