This is a free PRELIMINARY PREVIEW UNFINISHED version of the QuickLetter Address Book module of Working Software's (upcoming) QuickLetter Suite for BeOS. The QuickLetter Suite modules work together as well as with other programs. (Check out the Spellswell demo.)
The QuickLetter Address Book saves and organizes your address information, including mailing addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers, e-mail addresses, web addresses and other relevant information.
QuickLetter Address Book LITE is regularly updated. Be sure to visit our web site located at http://www.working.com where you can download the latest version.
INSTRUCTIONS:
(Updated instructions are always available on our support web page, which can be reached from the Instructions and Support item in QuickLetter Address Book LITE's Info menu.)
THE FIRST TIME: When the QuickLetter Address Book LITE is first started you are asked to name a new address book. Enter the name of the new address book and click Save. After this first time QuickLetter will always open with the last address book that was in use.
ENTERING NAMES AND ADDRESSES: Use Make a New Record from the Records menu to enter a new record. Click the Add button to add a new record. After adding a record you can continue adding more records by entering names and addresses and clicking the Add button. Use the Cancel button when you are finished adding records.
THE ADDRESS BOOK LIST WINDOW: After opening an existing address book, or adding records to a new address book, you will see a list of the names and addresses in your address book. This list can be sorted according to any field, such as last names. You can search for particular information in any field of any record.
You can modify any record by double-clicking on the record or selecting the record and choosing the Modify a Record item from the Records menu.
All records are automatically saved into the designated address book file when you Quit or Close.
SORTING RECORDS: Click on the column title to perform a sort. For example, clicking on the Last Name column's title causes the address book to be sorted by last names.
HIDING COLUMNS: Use the View menu to hide and show columns. If a checkmark appears next to a column name, the column is visible. For example, to hide the Middle Name column use the View menu to remove the checkmark located next to the Middle Name item.
The View menu also contains some pre-configured views. For example, selecting Name and E-mail will cause only the first name, last name and phone numbers to be visible. Use the All item to restore visibility of all columns.
THE ACTION MENU: The Action menu lets you choose various actions that can be performed with selected records. Actions are dimmed of not applicable. For example, if there is no web page URL in a selected record the Open this Record's Web Page item will be dimmed.
Copy this Record to the Clipboard copies an entire record into the clipboard, with tabs between the fields.
Copy this Address to the Clipboard copies a formatted name and address into the clipboard. The name and address are formatted as they would appear at the top of a letter or on an envelope.
Send E-mail opens an e-mail program with this record's e-mail address as the addressee.
Address an Envelope opens an envelope addressing program with this record's name and address as the addressee.
Make a Letter opens a word processor or letter writing program with this record's name and address as the addressee.
Mail Merge interacts with a word processing or letter-writing program to merge a list of names and addresses into letters.
Send a FAX opens a FAX program with this record's FAX number.
Open this Record's Web Page opens NetPositive or another web browser to the URL in this record's web page field.
IMPORTING: Currently QuickLetter Address Book Lite only imports one format. We use tab-delimited records (the fields are separated by tab characters), in the order that the fields appear in the listing window (first name, middle name, last name, etc...). We plan to add many import formats and features so check back at the web page regularly.
INTERACTION WITH OTHER PROGRAMS
QuickLetter Address Book Lite will interact with programs that use "Word Services" to look up e-mail and postal addresses using someone's nickname.
You can try out this interaction using a program called BeMail with Word Services that comes with both the free demo and the complete version of Spellswell. This is a special version of BeMail with a "Services" menu. After QuickLetter Address Book Lite has been started one time this Services menu will contain two new items: Look Up E-Mail Address and Look Up Postal Address. If you hilite a name in BeMail with Word Services that also is a "nickname" in the currently open or last used QuickLetter Address Book Lite address file you can then use these menu items to look up that nickname and bring over the e-mail or postal address of that person.
Since I've even confused myself with the grammar of that paragraph I'll try an example. Run the application named "BeMail with Word Services". In the "To:" field of your open e-mail message type a nickname of someone in the address book whose e-mail address is also in the address book. Hilite that nickname and choose Look Up E-Mail Address from the Services menu. It will open up the address book, look up that person and replace the hilited nickname with the e-mail address.
