Section 6.2

Course 1 A questionnaire was use to gather the students' opinions on: - how effective the weekly questions and basic content delivery was, - how effective the DVC was for supporting quality educational dialogue, - how the delivery compared with a face-to-face tutorial, - how the tutorials could be improved.

To make it easier and more flexible for the students to write their responses the questionnaire was printed and sent by post, and responses were by post. Students were encouraged to write additional comments. Because there were a small number of participants the questions could be a mix of easy-to-answer multiple choice questions and in-depth descriptive questions.

The questionnaire was deemed to be successful, in that it revealed the students' wish for more peer contact. Students were not asked specifically about their opinions on the MBone tools although there were several open question when they could have passed a comment on the tools but they chose to address other issues.

Course 2 A questionnaire was used to gather students' opinions on: - the way DVC affects their participation in a tutorial, - the benefits of having other participants in the tutorials, - the effectiveness of tutor-less discussions, - inhibitors to deeper discussions, - the quality of the audio and video, - the extent to which the audio and video quality impinged on the tutorials.

The questionnaire was sent via EMail and all 7 main participants responded. The style of the questions was a similar mix to those of the first questionnaire, although the content was different.

On the last two points, most students were satisfied with the video but said that improved video quality would been beneficial to their studies.
