Current releases: ----------------- Current EPIC4 production release: EPIC4-2.10 Current EPIC5 production release: EPIC5-1.0 ----------------------------------------------------- About the meaning of "alpha", "beta" and "production" ----------------------------------------------------- ALPHA releases may not work totaly up to their billing. They might be very usable, and then again, they might not be. Watch the epic mailing list for release info. BETA releases are usually stable releases that have reached some major checkpoint for implementation. You are encouraged to use beta releases as every day clients, but you should be advised that development continues almost every day, so further beta upgrades may be neccesary before the client is ``production quality.'' PRODUCTION releases are by all accounts stable releases that are considered to be usable by every person as an everyday client. We try to make sure these releases have essentially no significant bugs, and these releases only come out at the end of a major development cycle. Once a development cycle goes into production releases, no major work is done after that, only bug fixes and minor things. (EPIC3 was an expection, but thats a long story.) HEADS UP! --------- Because Kanan kept bugging me, I reorganized this site. I apologize in advance to anyone who is inconvenienced by this. I hope that this is the one and only reorganization I ever will do. There are now five directories: EPIC3-PRODUCTION (now pointing to the archive) EPIC4-BETA (now pointing to the archive) EPIC4-ALPHA (not pointing to the archive) EPIC4-PRODUCTION (epic4-1.0.1, epic4-2.0, and epic4-2.2) EPIC5-ALPHA (epic5 alphas) old-documentation (KNOWNBUGS and UPDATES from older versions) EPIC3-PRODUCTION: ---------------- This directory points to the general epic archive for those who are using a port or package distribution that wants to ftp a particular release. There are no longer any recommended EPIC3 production releases, but EPIC3.004 is still supported. Although there are no known problems with EPIC3.004, nearly every script is written for EPIC4. EPIC4-PRODUCTION: ---------------- This directory holds the three production EPIC4 releases (EPIC4-1.0.1, EPIC4-2.0, and EPIC4-2.2) and links to help files which may or may not be production quality. All three releases are very stable. EPIC4-BETA: ----------- This directory points to the general epic archive for those who are using a port or package distribution that wants to ftp a particular release. There are no longer any recommend EPIC4 beta releases. Use EPIC4-2.2. EPIC4-ALPHA: ------------ This directory points to the general epic archive for those who are using a port or package distribution that wants to ftp a particular release. There are no longer any recommend EPIC4 alpha releases. Use EPIC4-2.2. EPIC5-ALPHA: ------------ This directory holds whatever alpha-quality releases I feel like keeping around. For obvious reasons it will always contain the most current alpha release, and it will usually carry one or two of the most recent alpha releases. I do not keep alpha releases forever, though. You are of course invited to use these releases *at your own risk*. There are *no guarantees* that these releases work to any degree of the definition of "work". If you have problems, you can ask #epic on EFNet for information, but it may very well be that there are bugs that will not be fixed until the next alpha. Old documentation: ------------------ Look in the old-documentation/ directory for the UPDATES file covering user changes up to and including epic3.004. Also look in there for the KNOWNBUGS file that covers minute changes made the epic4pre1 and epic4pre2 cycles. Send questions and hate mail to jnelson@epicsol.org Jeremy Nelson
