Art Crimes: Toronto 2

All pictures on this page are © copyright 1994 Jane Gadsby

Jane Gadsby took these pictures while working on a master's degree at York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Her thesis is on graffiti as a communications method. Yorkhas lots of graffiti in all kinds of styles. Some of it is located suspiciously near the Fine Arts Department. (!) Jane provided the captions for her photographs.

The pictures on this page were taken during theconstruction of York Lanes (a small shopping plaza located on the York University campus) and the Student Centre.

There was a lot of controversy over the construction of both of these buildings. Many people objected to a "mall" on campus as it would make the campus more commercial and would not be aesthetically pleasing.

The Student Centre was controversial because it was many years behind schedule and thousands of dollars over budget. The size of the building concerned many because it was planned to be (and did become) a huge, cavernous building. These pictures echo student attitudes toward these building efforts.

No information on the artists is available.
