SD La Cave / Lek- Sowat- Legz- Roti - Photos by Nicolas Gzeley BD

A year ago, Mehdi Ben Cheikh from Galerie Itinérance started inviting street artists from around the world to work in the empty flats of an abandoned building, in the south of Paris. Lek and I (Sowat) chose to work inside the tower's basement. With its bad lighting, small corridors and dank atmosphere, the place looked so much like a maze that we decided to base our installation on Greek Mythology's Minotaur.

First, we excavated various objects left in the basement by the building's former tenants and covered them with white fluorescent paint before displaying them in key parts of the cellar. Secondly we asked Roti, a young and ultra talented graffiti writer and sculptor, to build a plaster Minautor that we placed at the center of the maze. Like a modern version of the golden thread, we then painted all pipes and hoses leading to the beast with fluorescent paint. Legz, one of the first French graffiti writers, who left the streets to paint exclusively in abandoned places, then started painting his signature interlacing "spaghettis" all around the basement empty boxes. Finally, using only black light and fluorescent paint, we covered the rest of the basements with our own lines, shapes and abstract calligraphies ...

This basement and the rest of La Tour Paris 13 opened on the 1st of October 2013 for a month and was free to the public.
